In this edition, I have corrected typographical errors that were not detected in the second edition, rephrased or deleted a few problems in the Exercises and added a few new ones. One of the original figures (Figure 8. 10) was incorrectly drawn and is now corrected. I would like to thank all those students who pointed out those errors to me. However, I
still continue to urge students to check the computations for themselves and to convince themselves of the truth of the statements in the book, not just because I said that they are true.
Over the years, students have often requested for answers to the exercises even though I have always emphasized that they should focus on the logical and mathematical correctness of their methods rather than the numerical answers. Since correct answers do presumably give some kind of assurance, if not guidance, I have now included in this edition an appendix which gives the answers of all the exercises in this edition. Many of these answers were recently made available to students. I should thank those students who gave me some feedback about the answers; in particular, one of them who spotted a few numerical errors in the answers posted and which have been corrected.
I would finally like to thank Patsy Tan and Sarah Kwok of McGraw-Hill for their unfailing efforts and patience in getting me to “update” the second edition and to Tan Meng Meng and the production team for their excellent design work.
